Happy Diwali

The festival of lights, Diwali, is here. On this wonderful occasion I wish all my blogger friends peace and prosperity. As per Hindu tradition this festival marks the homecoming of lord Rama after slaying the demon Ravana. Therefore the festival in essence is celebration of restoration of good after destroying evil and etymologically Diwali means a ‘row of lights’. The houses are spring cleaned, decorated and lit with a row of lights. I will get on with the preparations and may you all have a very Happy Diwali. (photo courtesy-kalisipudi.wordpress.com)

Happy Diwali to you, too! I was in India for Diwali in 2007, so I've been remembering it today.

GT...they sell these candles at our Indian store/market across the street...we are so lucky to have it. The parents own a restaurant and shop in West Palm Beach, and now their son and his wife run this store which has moved right next to me!!! They were explaining to me how you just lay the wick into the oil and light it, and I wondered how it would stay in there, but I can see from this picture how it is done! The row of candles is amazingly beautiful! Have a wonderful time!

Happy Diwali! I love the idea of the "restoration of good after destroying evil." Celebrating with light is always magical... the lights in the photo are very beautiful. What kind of oil do most use to float the wick in? I hope you have a wonderful celebration! I am imagining lights all over India ... in peoples homes... floating in rivers and ponds... and joy... much joy. I hope too that this promise might be reincarnated into our present time. Carol

Happy Diwali to you too, I will light some candles in a row in my greenhouse as I use to do whenever it is something extra to celebrate.

I read about Diwali on my garden kalender and thought of you. I hope that Diwali brought you everything you hoped it might bring.

Here we are in dire need of light as the days are getting decidedly shorter.

Hello Doc. I have been reading your blog for a long time now and you are an inspiration. I remember googling 'india gardening blogs' a long time ago and yours was the only blog that came up.
So finally a big Hello to you.

Thank you my dear blogger friends for all your lovely Diwali wishes. God bless you all...
Carol, the oil used is generally mustard oil, though i do not know the merits of doing so.
