Cherry Blossoms

This spring I tasted a different kind of bloom, thanks to my blogging friend Geek Gardener and another generous gardener Thomas whom I met on Orkut. Thomas was kind enough to send some seeds from the wonderful place, Kerala, where he lives. It was around one year back that he sent a scrap about having couriered seeds of tomatoes, beans, bitter gourd and brinjal. The seeds turned out to be of excellent quality and the lovely tomatoes which grew out of them are the tastiest and juiciest I have ever had. Geek Gardenerfrom Bangalore gave the seeds for cherry tomatoes. A lot bloomed for me this spring, but these cherry tomatoes in four different shapes were unlike anything I ever had. They were very different from tomatoes I had seen in real. In fact, my friends and neighbors were quite amused to see these little, shiny tomatoes, a sight they were not used to. Cherry tomatoes are not very common in my part of the country, though, thanks to the plethora of cookery shows, things are changing. I had a lot of them growing but didn’t have much idea on what to do with the pretty harvest. Googling for recipes, and with a little improvisation I prepared this salad, which was a little sour but was praised by my guests; a part for the novelty and a part for the health benefits.Blogging is so good, healthy and…tasty too!

Blogger friends are the best, eh??? I tell you, blogging has increased my happiness so much...good for the soul, I suppose! Glad you found some recipes to use your little tomatoes in. They are such fun! The yellow ones are so cute and colorful...they add so much to the salad! Today is Earth Day here in the U.S. I want to wish you a happy Earth Day as well!

Cherry tomatoes are the easiest to grow in our warm climates, I just love them. We use them a lot in salads, halved on pizza, I also plop them whole or halved into curries and make tomato sauces-it only needs 5 minutes cooking.

We grow lots of the small fruited tomatoes here in Texas... they seem to take the heat better for some reason... the big ones always get thick skinned and split.

Our favorite thing to do with them... put them in a bowl with onions sliced into rings, and strips of green pepper... chop fresh basil leaves on top, then olive oil and vinegar. Yummy.

Hi Greenthumb,

Excellent!.It makes me so happy to see the fruits of all the varieties at the same time. Do save the seeds. The yield will be much more if not for the heat.

Happy gardening.

I usually grow red cherry tomatoes but this year I'm trying yellow ones. I like to just pop them in my mouth but do have a good recipe that uses them with pasta I sometimes make.

There are just so many different colours, sizes and shapes of tomatoes around nowadays. I must admit to having a bit of an obsession, but don't really have the space to indulge too much. I love those teardrop shapes you show in your photo!
